Conversion of a two bed Victorian mansion flat and existing lower ground floor storage area, into a two storey 3 bedroom apartment. To create a large open plan living space at ground floor, the bedrooms are being relocated to the basement. The key challenge of the project is to create a sense of space and light in a confined and height restricted single aspect space. By connecting the two levels via an open central stair, the ground floor will be split into two distinct areas for living and dining. At basement level this will form a rational layout with the two new bedrooms overlooking the light well and the ensuite bathrooms to the rear. This maximises daylight to the most important spaces. The design is complemented by built in storage and a palette of bright and reflective materials throughout to give the greatest sense of space. The project achieved planning permission and conservation area consent in November 2010.
